How to Pre-Treat Stains Before Dry Cleaning
A Quick Guide to Avoiding Common Stain Disasters
Accidents happen more often than any of us would like. A splash of red wine here, a smudge of grease there, or a spilled cup of coffee can quickly ruin your favorite outfit…and your day!
At Best Cleaners, we specialize in removing tough stains, a little bit of pre-treating can significantly increase your chances of a successful cleaning. Here’s a simple guide to help you tackle some common stains at home:
General Tips:
- Act Fast: The sooner you address a stain, the better.
- Blot, Don’t Rub: Rubbing can push the stain deeper into the fabric.
- Test in an Unseen Area: Always test your chosen cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.
- Don’t be fooled by stain pens: In many cases, stain pens and wipes can actually discolor your garments. Use with caution!
Common Stains & Their Treatments:
Grease and Oil:
- Dry Shampoo: Spray directly on the stain and then wipe away with a damp cloth
- Beware of other common household treatments: Other commonly suggested household treatments for grease and oil can leave further stains and damage the fabric.
Coffee and Tea:
- Cold Water: Rinse the stain with cold water.
- White Vinegar: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Apply to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before blotting.
Ink:
- Rubbing Alcohol: Apply rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and gently blot the stain.
Blood:
- Cold Water: Rinse the stain with cold water.
- Ammonia Mixed with Water: Apply directly to the stain and blot.
Remember: While these methods can be effective, it’s always best to consult the care label of your garment for specific instructions.
And, it’s always best to bring your garment straight to us if it’s a delicate fabric (don’t try to treat silk on your own!), or if the stain is particularly stubborn. Our expert team can work their magic on all sorts of fabrics and all sorts of stains!
